Plan Code: 880, CIP Code: 30.0101

Award: Associate of Science

Credit Hours: 60 - 64

Program Head: Lee Anne Bowling, labowling@mgcc.edu, (540) 863-2871

Length: Four Semesters (Two years of full-time study)

Purpose: The Science Associate of Science degree represents the first two years of a four-year college or university degree in one of the many natural science and other STEM careers. In this program, a student will engage in the rigorous study of initial courses in mathematics and sciences which lead to the more advanced courses to be taken when the student transfers into the third year of a four-year college or university. Also, during the first two years, the student will complete humanities and social science requirements and electives, allowing more time in his or her final two years for intensive study in a science major.

MGCC’s Science A.S. degree has been configured to support the following TransferVirginia Pathways:

Biology * Chemistry * Engineering * Kinesiology * Mathematics * Computer Science * Chemistry * Environmental Science

For more information, visit the https://www.transfervirginia.org/.

Components: The Science AS degree program is comprised four components:

  1. SDV 100  College Success Skills (1 CR)
  2. Uniform Certificate of General Studies  (31 - 33 CR)
  3. Science Specialized Requirements  (12 CR)
  4. Transfer Core  (16 CR - 18 CR)
    TOTAL 60 CR - 64 CR

College Success Skill is fulfilled through SDV 100  and is intended to be taken during or before the first semester of college study. The Uniform Certificate of General Studies   is a stacked certificate designed to be completed during the first year of study and consists of 7 different blocks.  Science Specialized Requirements  fulfill requirements in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) pathways.  Transfer Core are designed to be completed in the second year of study. Transfer Core must be courses intended for transfer to four-year institutions. Students should consult with their faculty advisor or counselor and the college or university where they plan to transfer, to confirm the transferability of the course. Students are encouraged to follow pathways established through TransferVirginia.

Admission Information: In addition to the general admission requirements to the College, students whose placement test scores indicate the need to increase their level of proficiency in reading, writing and/or mathematics will be required to take appropriate developmental courses. Enrolling in developmental courses may increase the length of time necessary for completing the chosen course or program of study but will enhance the student’s preparation for college-level coursework and increase chances for successful attainment of academic, occupational and personal goals. General admission requirements of the College apply to this program.

Graduation Requirements: Students must complete the required courses in curriculum and achieve a 2.0 minimum grade point average to receive this academic award.

Guided Pathways are mapped to the Transfer Virginia Biology Pathway.  Students should consult with their academic advisor about the pathway they intend to use.
