Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) - Levels 1-4 (NCCER), FastForward Credential Program

Description

HVAC technicians work with heating, air conditioning, or refrigeration systems to manage the temperature, humidity, and overall air quality in residential and commercial buildings and the climate-controlled environments required for food storage, medications and other perishable items. With the continuous development of HVAC technology, employers recognize the importance of workforce education and keeping up to speed with the latest equipment and skills. This NCCER program been designed by highly qualified subject matter experts to give you an advantage with high employment qualifications in the HVAC industry. It is North American Technician Excellence (NATE) recognized and complies with the DOL standards for related technical instruction in registered apprenticeships.

Through a combination of convenient online exercises and live classroom/lab training, this four-level, hybrid program presents theoretical and practical skills essential to your success as an HVAC installer or technician.

  • HVAC Level 1 introduces aspiring technicians to HVAC theories and industry practices. Training includes modules in trade math, basic electricity and electrical safety, fundamentals of heating systems and combustion processes, fundamentals of cooling systems and refrigeration/heat transfer processes, air distribution systems, and basic piping practices for HVAC. Pre-/co-requisite: NCCER Core.
  • Level 2 delves deeper into HVAC theories and industry practices. Includes modules in alternating current, compressors, refrigerants and oils, leak detection and refrigerant handling, metering devices, heat pumps, basic HVAV maintenance, venting systems for gas-fired units, duct systems, commercial airside systems, air quality equipment, and introductory hydronic systems. Prerequisite: NCCER HVAC Level 1.
  • Level 3 covers content on fasteners, hardware and wiring terminations; troubleshooting control circuits and motors; troubleshooting cooling, heat pumps, gas and oil heating, and HVAC accessories; zoning, ductless, and variable refrigerant flow systems; commercial hydronic systems; steam systems, retail refrigeration systems; and customer relations.  Prerequisite: NCCER HVAC Level 2.
  • Level 4 includes modules in water treatment, indoor air quality, energy conservation equipment, building management systems, system air balancing, construction drawings and specifications, heating and cooling system design, commercial and industrial refrigeration systems, alternative and specialized heating and cooling systems, and fundamentals of crew leadership. Prerequisite: NCCER HVAC Level 3.

Trainee Requirement Details

Each level provides up to 80 hours of classroom/lab training with online homework and activities to be completed outside of class. Textbooks, online access code, and all materials are included in tuition. Computer/tablet and internet access are required for homework completion. Eighth-grade competence in reading and mathematics is recommended. Students must have completed or be concurrently enrolled in NCCER Core Curriculum.
